Repair or Replace Your Fence? How to Decide Before Another Arkansas Winter

Newly Installed fence in Little Rock, AR

Every winter, we get calls from Little Rock homeowners whose fence finally gave out. An ice storm brought a limb down across it, a gust of wind flattened a section that had been leaning for months, or the dog found the gap under a rotted panel. Most of these calls have something in common: the fence was showing warning signs well before it failed.

Fall is the best time to look at your fence closely and decide whether it needs a repair or a replacement. Here’s how we make that call when we walk a property.

Signs Your Fence Needs Attention Now

Walk the whole fence line and look for these problems:

  • Leaning posts or sections. This is the most common issue we see in Central Arkansas. Red clay soil holds water, then swells and shrinks with the seasons, and posts that weren’t set deep enough slowly lean.

  • Soft or rotted wood at the ground line. Push a screwdriver into the post right at the dirt. If it sinks in easily, the post is rotting from the inside.

  • Gates that drag, sag, or won’t latch. Wide wood gates often sag after their first humid summer if they weren’t built with anti-sag bracing or hardware.

  • Loose, cracked, or missing pickets. Sun and moisture cycles split boards and back out nails over time.

  • Rusted hinges, latches, or brackets. Our humidity is hard on hardware.

  • Gaps at the bottom. Erosion and digging pets can open gaps that make a fence useless for keeping a dog in.

  • Loose or sagging chain link mesh. Chain link that’s lost its tension, or has a bent top rail, usually needs re-stretching or new rail.

When Repairing Your Fence Makes Sense

Repair is usually the right choice when:

·         The problem is limited to a few posts, a few panels, or one gate.

·         Most of the fence is still solid, and the wood isn’t soft or gray all the way through.

·         The fence is less than about 10–12 years old (for pressure-treated wood).

·         You plan to stay put for a few years and just need the fence to work and look decent.

Typical repair costs in Central Arkansas:

·         Single post replacement: about $150–$350 per post

·         Wood privacy section replacement (8 ft): about $150–$400

·         Gate rebuild or new hardware: about $100–$450

·         Chain link re-stretch and repair: about $150–$500, depending on length

When we replace a post, we set it properly: correct depth, and a concrete footing. A post set that way should outlast the old posts around it.

When Replacing Your Fence Is the Better Investment

Replacement usually makes more sense when:

  • Several posts are leaning or rotted. If posts are failing in multiple places, the rest are usually close behind. Patching one post at a time gets expensive fast.

  • Repairs would cost more than about a third of a new fence. At that point, you’re putting good money into an old fence.

  • The wood is gray, soft, and splitting throughout. New boards next to old boards won’t hold up the old ones.

  • The fence is 15+ years old. Most pressure-treated fences in Arkansas last 15–20 years.

  • Your needs have changed. Maybe you have a new dog, a new pool, or you want more privacy or a different look. That’s a good time to upgrade to a new wood privacy fence or consider vinyl or chain link.

If you’re on the fence (sorry), it helps to know what a new wood fence costs in Little Rock so you can compare it against the repair quote.

Why Fall Is the Time to Fix It

Central Arkansas winters bring ice storms, hard freezes, and strong winds. A fence with weak posts handles a calm summer fine, then fails the first time ice weighs down a tree limb or a strong north wind hits a solid privacy panel. Fixing problems in October or November means:

  • Your fence is ready for winter weather instead of failing during it.

  • You’re on the schedule before the post-storm rush, when every fence company in town is booked.

  • The ground is usually workable, and cooler temperatures are good for setting posts.

What About Storm Damage and Insurance?

If a storm has already damaged your fence, take photos before anything gets moved. Many homeowner policies cover fence damage from falling trees or wind, depending on your coverage and deductible. We provide itemized written estimates that you can send to your insurance company, and we can work with your adjuster.

Fence Repair FAQ

Can you repair just one section of my fence? Yes. We replace individual posts, panels, rails, and gates all the time, and we match your existing wood and style as closely as we can.

Will new boards match my old fence? New wood will look brighter at first. After a season of weather, it blends in. Staining the whole fence after a repair helps everything match.

Why do fence posts lean so much in Little Rock? Our clay soil expands when wet and shrinks when dry. Posts set too shallow, or without good drainage, get pushed around by that movement until they lean or rot.

Do I need a permit to repair my fence in Little Rock? Usually not. Residential fences 7 feet or shorter don’t need a building permit in Little Rock, and repairs at the same height and location are routine. You still need an Arkansas 811 locate before digging new post holes, and we handle that.

How fast can you get out after a storm? For safety problems, like a fence down with pets or kids in the yard, we move you up the schedule as fast as we can. Let us know it’s urgent when you call.
